Does anybody know how to put a Magento 1.6.2.0 site into maintenance mode?

I've seen the Maintenance Page - ArtsOn.IT add-on, but by all accounts it doesn't work on 1.6.2.0. I've also seen the one by Balke Technologies, but Magento gives me an "Invalid channel.xml file" alert when I insert the key for that one.
