Hey all,

Was thinking of getting an Interspire shopping cart, and was wondering will I need an SSL certificate to make sure the checkout is secure?

Hey

the answer is Yes, if you are using a payment gateway that will be built into your site.  For instance, Paypal will redirect you off of the site to make the payment, and so your customers will navigate away from your site to their site, at which point they will enter an area secured by an SSL purchased by Paypal. 

Paypal Pro, however, which I believe you have to pay for, is done through your site (no navigation to their site for payments) and so you would need SSL - it's not *essential* but to make a checkout secure you should defo invest in one as you are running risks without it and a lot of people may not trust your site.

As Wolf mentioned, you will need to have an SSL if the end payment is taking place on your website. If it is taking place on a 3rd party website (Paypal, RBSpay etc..) then it is your payment providers responsibility to secure the payment pages.
