Hi,

I could do with some guidance regarding upgrading  Magento. I've had a lot of trouble upgrading and had to restore the original system from a backup. The upgrade went fine in local testing, but something went wrong when I did the same on the live system. I really don't have a clue what went wrong. What is the best way to upgrade?  Should we set up a test site on a server?

I would be very grateful for any guidance.

A lot of people now are using subdomains and copying their live sites into those domains.  This means that the web space and database are replicated onto a subdomain and you can happily upgrade, break, ruin and celebrate on this domain without causing problems to the live store.

You would prob have to change the base_url settings in the copied store and clear the cache, and fingers crossed the domain should move over fine.

If it works for staging. then it should work for the live site.  Live and local environments often disagree over whether something will work or not (as far as Magento seems to be concerned anyway) so it's always better trying it out on the same environment.

Hope that helps!
