I am having problems sending mail - help!

Sending emails is the most common source of a problem using an email program.  There are a multitude of reasons that sending an email may go wrong, and we cannot help you with all of them!

There are one of two groups who will be responsible for letting you send your mail; it will either be your mail provider (i.e., NuBlue) ? or your ISP (who you have your Internet with).

If you are sending mail through NuBlue, you should be using the same outgoing mail server as your incoming mail server.  You will also need to authenticate your outgoing mail server, normally by using the same username and password as your incoming mail server.  The need to authenticate the outgoing mail is to stop people who don?t have a right to use our mail server (i.e. someone like you who has mail set up with us) using it ? for sending spam, for instance.

If you are sending mail using your ISP, we can only offer advice.  Your ISP may require you to use special settings for it to work, and you may or may not need to authenticate your outgoing mail server.  If you cannot get your outgoing mail to work with NuBlue or this is your preferred choice (or, you?re with AOL and you have no choice), then you will need to contact your ISP for help and support with this.

If you are having trouble sending mail, you should check for an error message first of all.  An error message can be searched for in Google and will often give you an accurate description of the problem as well as how to fix it.

Usually the error when sending an email comes from not authenticating your email properly, or from the port that your mail is sent through being blocked.  If you have recently updated or installed antivirus or firewall software (or even just Windows) then this may be your issue.  You should check the article on using telnet later in this guide.
