What is an SSL Certificate?

SSL stands for ‘Secure Socket Layer’ and is a commonly used protocol for managing the security of a message transmission over the Internet.

SSL Certificates are used to secure the transfer of confidential information, such as Credit Card numbers and visitor details.  All data transmitted over an SSL connection is encrypted for additional security, providing your website visitors with peace of mind and confidence that their data is secure.

Any customer using your site will know they are in a secure, SSL Certificated area, as their Internet Browser will read the Certificate and display a little yellow padlock to show that the area is secured.

Why would I need a SSL Certificate?

If you want to conduct online transactions on your site, send and/or receive sensitive information on your site, or have a secure server to server connection, you will need an SSL Certificate to ensure that the connections and the data that they transmit are safe.  They are the best way of ensuring that those who use your site can trust any submissions of sensitive data that they may be required or desire to make.

What do I need in order to use an SSL Certificate?

To use an SSL Certificate, you need to have a registered Domain Name and a Web Hosting account, with a Dedicated IP address.  Each SSL Certificate we sell is mapped to your individual Domain Name and you can then choose what pages on your website you would like to secure.

Why will I need a Dedicated IP?

Dedicated IP addresses are required for any website that wants its own SSL Security Certificate.  You cannot register your SSL Certificate to a Shared IP address that also Hosts other sites – it requires a specific IP tied to a specific Domain that has a specific SSL Certificate, to prove that your website is secure and trustworthy for e-commerce and sensitive information transfer.

Dedicated IP addresses are available on request, and can be purchased along with your SSL Certificate.

What is the difference between SSL Certifcates?

Every Certificate has a different grade of encryption.  All SSL certificates increase the security of your website for your visitors and are encrypted to very high levels, so the level of encryption is up to you.  The more ‘bits’ the higher the level of encryption – many Certificates are encrypted at 128/256 bits.  Essentially, it is up to you if you want to pay for a higher level of encryption!

The SSL Premium and Business ID Certificates also come with a GeoTrust Site Seal to place on your website.  This makes it visually obvious that your site uses SSL Certification – an obvious advantage if someone is trying to decide whether to use your site’s secure areas or not.

How long does my Certificate last?

SSL Certificates can be registered with us for one or two years at a time.  Payments recur annually, and you will always be reminded by email that your SSL Certificate is up for renewal before it expires.  For customers wanting to register a Certificate for longer than two years, please contact our sales team on 0845 0045 583 or by email and we will be happy to accommodate you.

Can I have more than one SSL Certificate?

You can own as many SSL Certificates as you like, but only one Certificate can be used per individual Domain and IP.  For owners of multiple Domain Names we offer a bulk SSL option that will allow you to buy SSL Certificates in packs of 10 – please contact us to request this.

Do I get an Invoice?

Every time you buy a product from NuBlue, we will email you an invoice.  We don’t believe in wasting paper so paper copies of Invoices will not be provided. Invoices are, however, available to view and print (if you choose!) at any time in your online account management area.

Do you charge VAT?

Yes.  VAT is charged on all SSL, Hosting and Domain purchases.  All advertised prices, except where specifically marked, are excluding VAT.  Our UK VAT Registration Number is 865 6930 80.

Are there any extra costs in Hosting a Secure Site?

With NuBlue, the only cost would be the Certificate and an extra IP.  There are no further charges for having secure areas on your site.

Do you provide an SSL Installation Service?

Yes, we do.  NuBlue can provide an SSL Installation Service on all our Security Certificates.  The service is a flat rate of £50 plus VAT, and includes the integration of your SSL Certificate into your website – along with cross browser testing to make sure that no errors are experienced by your users.
