What is VPS?
VPS stands for Virtual Private Server. A VPS is, essentially, a way of created an isolated hosting space (often referred to as a container) that functions as if it was a Dedicated, stand-alone server. Software – in our case, Parallel’s Virtuozzo – is used to create a Virtual server on one of our servers.
What are the benefits of VPS?
As a VPS is a virtual recreation of a Dedicated Server, you have full control over it. You can restart or shut down your VPS when you like, you can install the programs you want, and you can configure your VPS to suit your own needs – the kind of power you don’t get in a Shared environment.
You also get guaranteed server resources, another major benefit over Shared hosting. Guaranteed allowances of RAM or CPU usage mean that, unlike Shared, no matter how busy the other VPS Containers on a VPS server are, you will always have a certain amount of the server resources for your own use, helping to eliminate performance spikes during busier periods.
Do I get Shell (SSH) access with my VPS?
If you want, yes! Your VPS is yours and if you feel capable or willing to enable shell access for your VPS – then do it. Your VPS is self-contained and yours to manage as you see fit.
Is my VPS managed?
By default, no. We do offer a VPS management service, similar to the management options we offer for our Dedicated Server clients. Please consult the VPS management page for more details.
What are the DNS settings for my VPS?
When you order your VPS you are assigned an IP address of your own, which you can use to register your own custom DNS. You can also use this IP by changing your DNS to that of your domain registrar, and changing your host records to reflect this IP. Further IP addresses can be purchased if you require them.
What control panels do I have access to?
You have access to two; your Virtuozzo Power Panel, and your Plesk Control Panel. The Power Panel can be used to administer your VPS server; whereas the Plesk Control Panel is used to administer the individual hosting accounts within your VPS server. In most cases customers will only need to use the Plesk Panel to administer their hosting.
Why do I have to purchase licenses for my VPS?
Parallels operate a licensing system for servers, Virtual or otherwise. Our Shared servers have been licensed by us, and Shared customers use the server within the limits of the licenses we have purchased. As you step into the world of using your own server you also need to take responsibility for purchasing the license to operate the Parallels software on your server.
Licenses are needed to increase your domain limit for your server, and to utilise certain applications, such as Spam Assassin or anti–virus software.
Please note that the prices for licensing VPS Containers are lower than the license prices for Dedicated Servers!
What operating system does my VPS have?
As with all our Hosting, your VPS runs on Unix CentOS servers.
How long will it take for my VPS to be set up?
The VPS itself can be provisioned within an hour during office hours, so you will be able to access the VPS through your control panels in little time at all. The biggest delay will be pointing your domain name at your new server. Existing NuBlue Shared Hosting customers will be able to swap their domains over to their VPS with our help and very little down time, if any at all. New customers will have to wait for their DNS or Host Records to propagate before their domain names point at their VPS, which may take up to 24 hours.
What payment methods are accepted for VPS Hosting accounts?
For Web Hosting accounts and Domain Name registrations, we accept PayPal, as well as the following major Credit and Debit cards: MasterCard, Solo, Visa, and Visa Electron.
Do you charge VAT?
Yes VAT is charged on all Hosting and Domain purchases. All advertised prices except where specifically marked, are excluding VAT. Our UK VAT registration number is 865 6930 80.
If you would like to make a purchase and you reside outside the UK please contact a member of the NuBlue team on 0845 0045 583.
Do I get an Invoice?
Every time you buy a product from NuBlue, we will email you an Invoice. We don’t believe in wasting paper so paper copies of Invoices will not be provided. Invoices are, however, available to view and print (if you choose!) at any time in your online account management area.
