Do I get SSH/Shell access?

R5 clients are on Shared Hosting and so will not have SSH / Shell access under any circumstances. R10 clients and above are on a VPS so they can enable SSH / Shell access.
How well does Magento run on Shared Hosting?

Magento is not designed to run on Shared Hosting; it is a resource intensive application and requires higher levels of resources to run than comparable shopping carts. However, we do optimise all of our hosting and select hardware specifically for the purposes of running Magento stores. Therefore, Shared Hosting is not the ideal platform for Magento, it will run happily on Shared Hosting if you are developing your store or running a low bandwidth site. No matter how hard we try (and we do!), in the end the best performance for Magento can only be realised on a Virtual or Dedicated server.
How well does Magento run on VPS Hosting?

A VPS enables Magento to run as it was meant to. Dedicated resources and full server control allow specific configurations and optimisations, which open up the performance of Magento to levels that cannot be reached on Shared platforms. However, as VPS is limited, the mid to high end VPS will run Magento far more efficiently than the low end VPS; and the more Magento stores you run on a VPS, the more power your VPS will require to notice the benefit. We recommend the VPS15 for running a single Magento store as a starting point!
Is it worth choosing a VPS over a Shared account?

It depends on your requirements. If you are hosting static sites, or you are not using Magento, Shared Hosting has all that you need. If however, you are running one or more Magento stores, the answer is a resounding 'Yes!' The power of a Dedicated server, without the price – and without having to share your resources or limit your control (as Shared clients must do). If you are looking for freedom and performance without the cost, a VPS is the best choice.
Do I have remote MySQL access?

You can set up remote MySQL access at your own risk on the R10 or R15 packages. R5 clients are on the Shared platform and cannot setup remote MySQL access.
What happens if I need to upgrade?

Contact the support team and we will guide you through the process. Unless you need to move to another platform (i.e. a VPS) the upgrade will be seamless. If you're moving to another platform, bear in mind this will require migrating your site to another server – but don't worry, we'll do this for you (out of hours, too!).
What happens if I go over my limits?

If you are over your account limits you will be notified via email with useful tips for reducing your usage. If you are repeatedly over your limits we will contact you to discuss your upgrade options. If you are on a VPS and you reach your disk space limit, you will need to contact us immediately as this will seriously affect your functionality! Similarly if you are reaching or going over your RAM limit on a regular basis you will need to seriously consider upgrading your VPS.
What do I choose if I need PCI-DSS compliancy?

If you need to be PCI-DSS compliant, you will have to choose a Virtual Server as a minimum to achieve this compliancy. On Shared Hosting, you cannot guarantee that all the clients on that a server are or need to be compliant; by its very nature, Shared Hosting will never meet the requirements of PCI-DSS compliancy. Ecommerce clients on Shared Hosting will need to use an off site payment gateway; so the burden of compliancy lies with the payment provider. If you wish to process card payments on your website you will need to make your business and your hosting compliant.
