Do I get SSH/Shell access?
VPS clients are able to access their server via SSH. Full instructions for setting this up and accessing via SSH are provided with your login document.
How well does Magento run on VPS Hosting?
A VPS enables Magento to run as it was meant to. Dedicated resources and full server control allow specific configurations and optimisations that open up the performance of Magento to levels that cannot be reached on Shared platforms. As a VPS is limited, the mid to high end VPS will run Magento far more efficiently than the low end VPS; and the more Magento stores you run on a VPS, the more power your VPS will require to notice the benefit. We recommend the VPS15 for running a single Magento store as a starting point!
What does a VPS do that Shared won't?
A VPS allows you to have SSH access. You can configure your firewall so the possibility for remote access, such as remote MySQL access, is open to you. You will also have an administrator login for your control panel; therefore you have full control over your hosting environment and configuration. On top of that you have dedicated resources for your hosting, so you can specifically configure your hosting to ensure that your resources are being utilised as you wish (you have no control over resource use on shared hosting). And the only person you have to worry about using up all your resources – is you.
Do I have remote MySQL access?
On a VPS you can enable this yourself should you wish. However we do not support remote SQL access.
What happens if I need to upgrade?
Contact the support team and we will guide you through the process. Unless you need to move to another platform (i.e. a Dedicated Server) the upgrade will be seamless, although we will need to reboot major services to complete the upgrade (this involves a few moments of downtime). If you're moving to another platform, bear in mind this will require migrating your site to another server – but don't worry, we'll do this for you (out of hours, too!).
What happens if I go over my limits?
If you reach your disk space limit, you will need to contact us immediately as this will seriously affect your functionality! Similarly if you are reaching or going over your RAM or bandwidth limit on a regular basis you will need to seriously consider upgrading your VPS. If you are repeatedly over your limits we will contact you to discuss your upgrade options.
Is a VPS PCI-DSS compliant?
We will need to configure your VPS to be compliant – we will do this when we initially configure the VPS if you require it. We will then request that you intiate the first scan of your networking – following this we will resolve any issues that are raised. You will still need to verify the compliancy of your company but your hosting will be complaint.
What is a Managed VPS?
A Managed client has access to the On Call Emergency Support number in case of any server issues out of hours. The client's server is monitored 24x7 and if we receive any alerts or warnings at any time of night or day, we will investigate and resolve the issue. Managed clients also receive priority support from the team.
What is a Self-Managed VPS?
A self-managed client can only access support during standard hours and through standard channels. The functionality of the server is their responsibility, and we will only be monitoring the hardware node that the VPS is located on (as well as any Managed clients on that server). We will not be notified if the server ceases to function, and we will not work on the server unless it is within office hours.
Do I need a Plesk License?
Yes! Every Plesk Control Panel needs to be licensed, without the license the functionality of the Panel will be useless for you. The 10 domain license that comes with your VPS is the minimum license available for the Control Panel. You can also request add ons for your control panel to extend the functionality, with Spam Filters, Server Mail Filters, AntiVirus software and more.
