Interview with Phill Kay at Brightpearl

Phill Kay is Head of Global Partnerships at Brightpearl, a powerful management system for multi-channel on and offline retail businesses which brings together orders, inventory, accounting, reporting and customer data in a single hub.

Brightpearl helps retailers process orders more efficiently, fine-tune control of their inventory and reduce their admin time, which can mean faster growth and profitability for their business. We ask Phill for his insights…


Q: Hi Phill, and thanks for this interview! Can you tell us a little bit about Brightpearl and what it can do for retail business owners?

A: Sure, we’re a UK and US based cloud retail management system serving about 1,300 customers at the moment. Typically, we help SMB multi-channel on and off line retailers cost effectively and quickly streamline their back office operations and gain immediate insight to drive accelerated profitable growth via the wealth of information that is collected into one place, as opposed to having to get that information from multiple disparate systems such as webstore and marketplace logins, epos, accountancy packages, CRM and marketing tools, reporting and listing tools.

Q: So Brightpearl is connected with some major brands, including Amazon, FedEx, eBay, Magento and Royal Mail. Are there more big-name partnerships on the horizon?

A: We have integrations to some of the major ecommerce platforms like Magento, Bigcommerce and Shopify, as well as marketplaces such as Amazon, eBay and Alibaba, but to be honest, with a strong network of partners, we are actually able to provide any integrations that you need to create the right solution including for example bespoke webstores, 3PL, EDI, concessions, listing, reporting and marketing tools. We are a very agile business and of course being cloud based with an open API, this makes these solutions very easy to provide.

Q: Is the Brightpearl system geared more towards businesses in certain industries, or does it have applications across the board?

A: That’s an important question. We have chosen at this stage in our lifecycle to concentrate our efforts on providing a best of breed solution for multi-channel retailers and wholesalers selling finished goods as opposed to requiring manufacturing solutions. Typical sectors that we serve include fashion and accessories, home and garden, sports and recreation, health and beauty and jewellery and luxury items.

Q: You have years of experience in sales – what are your top three tips for people who may just be starting out?

A: Great question! My number one tip is integrity. The old saying that “people buy from people (they trust)” is bang on for me, so being honest in all your dealings and avoiding blagging is critical! The second tip is to have a consistently high but “clever” work rate. A sales role will always be a numbers game, but being able to prioritise your core tasks on a consistent basis will maximise your chances for success. The third, but just as important tip is to balance your focus and work rate with maintaining authentic relationships with everyone around you – the role may feel very “one-man-band”, but it’s amazing how many people you need to bring along with you to help you succeed, so never forget to consistently give time to and sew positively into the lives of others around you!

Q: What do you feel was lacking for businesses before Brightpearl?

A: I honestly think that after 3 years of being at Brightpearl, the combination of an intuitive, integrated, cloud back office system at a reasonable cost point that is speedy to implement has brought a fresh and attractive new perspective to independent growing retailers quickly needing to achieve operational stability and make informed, profit-focussed decisions.

Q: What really drives you to do what you do with Brightpearl? How do you want to change the landscape in business?

A: From a personal point of view, my faith drives me to do all I can to bring passion, focus, openness, proactivity and diligence to my role. I also truly believe that with our work ethic, company culture and sheer graft across the business, we are well on the way to providing that truly ground-breaking, best-of-breed retail back office for the SMB sector which will allow them to not just survive but really thrive in an environment dominated by the retail giants – but there’s plenty of work still to do for sure!

Q: What are your passions outside the office?

A: With a 1 and 3 year old, not a lot really! I do dedicate loads of time into my job right now across 3 different timezones! but at the weekend, I make sure I spend quality time with my family and we carve out time to attend our local church. One day, I’ll get back into writing electronic music and drumming again hopefully and take the occasional family trip down to the caravan in Devon and (try and) do some surfing!
