NuBlue go to the races. and lose!
It was 11:15am on Saturday 21/07/2012. The first sunny day we can remember since summer 2011! BBQ’s and Racing Posts in hand, we waited on platform 5 for the train to Clark on what was destined to be an epic day of eating, drinking, betting and winning! Well that was the plan anyway.
The Build Up
When the train pulled up we realised we weren’t the only ones heading to Cartmel Races (The Royal Ascot of The North). We also realised our train tickets certainly didn’t guarantee us a seat!
After wrestling ourselves onto the train, all eyes turned to Martyn Fielding, our official NuBlue horse racing expert for guidance on the ‘must place’ bets of the day. Martyn broke down the form guide and added his own winning recommendations, leaving everyone confident that today was going to be a fun and profitable day. How wrong we were.
Upon arrival in the beautiful Village of Cartmel in Cumbria we headed for the beer garden at the Pig & Whistle to make final tacticcal adjustments and make sure no one had been trampled or lost on the train! Then we were ready, all present and correct, and we handed out the £14 each of Free Tote Sport betting vouchers and headed to the course.
Now, for those that have never been to Cartmel Races; picture a car boot sale with a Horse Race taking place around the outside. The atmosphere is very relaxed and friendly, and with the sun shining it really is a nice place to lose all your money! The day broke down into 7 races at 30 minute intervals. Which, it turns out, is just enough time to make an ill informed decision and stake money on it! And so it began.

The Conclusion
As you can probably tell by now, the races didn’t go too well! I think I speak for the whole team when I say that Gambling is not for us, and Martyn has a lot to answer for! But, we did get to spend the whole day in sunshine in the Lake District, and what better way to spend the only summer weekend of 2012. Maybe we will do better next year?!
